Potbelly causes unspeakable back pain when exercising. What types of exercise might be best to avoid that pain and still lose weight?

So I already have a bad back. It’s not something I can actually "fix" without surgery, but I can take care of it and make sure it’s strong and well supported. That’s what I’m hoping to work towards. To start I really need to lose weight. I put on a lot of weight and carry most of that weight in my stomach, which adds to the pressure my spine endures. Losing the potbelly will be an amazing change and would relieve a lot of the back pain I experience on a regular basis. The only issue is that exercising is one of the things that causes my back pain to flare up. Sometimes after exercising I can be out of commission for a week because my back gets so hurt or sore. So I need to find something that is easy on my back but still an effective workout. Running is awful. Walking for too long is awful. I try Zumba/dancing for exercise because I find it fun but it’s sooo killer on my back. Basically anything that involves getting down and up again from the floor repeatedly is the worst thing I can do to myself :( bending a lot in the waist and twisting is not good either. I feel very limited in my options. I have access to a gym, so if any specific equipment is best I am open to that. But also like to workout at home without equipment too. Any suggestions?
