how does a caloric deficit actually work?

probably sounds dumb but I’ve never been able to wrap my head around the concept. I always hear “calories in less than calories out,” but does this mean you need to exercise more than you eat? for example, if I eat 1200 calories a day, I need to burn 1500 calories a day to create a deficit of 300? pretty sure this is what it means but burning 1500 calories in a day sounds difficult and exhausting with my schedule as a student who works. I go on a lot of runs (about 4-6 miles each time, which for me burns 300-500 calories) and yoga but been difficult for me to tone up lately. do I need to eat less? work out more?
