How do I accept that progress isn’t linear?

I’m a freshman in college, never worked out before. I’ve played sports and walked at the park but I’ve never had a dedicated fitness routine with a clear goal in mind, so this is all new to me. I don’t necessarily want to lose drastic weight, I just want to live a healthy and active lifestyle where I don’t feel bad about my appearance. I truly to be kind to myself since I’m so new to this, but some days (like today) I get really hard on myself. It’s hard for me to run .1 mile, and a full one is impossible. I know the people at the gym also took time and effort to get where they are, but sometimes it sucks to not see instant results. And I noticed I used working out as an excuse to eat MORE instead of BETTER, which complicates it even more. I just want to know from people that have been at this for awhile: how do I be kind to myself and accept that it’ll take time and effort instead of instant results, and that my progress will not be linear?
