How many people manage to keep the weight off? Can you go back to a normal life?

By normal I don't mean eating junk food, pizza, burgers etc. I mean normal eating for people who cook most of their meals and eat healthy in general, it means not having to plan every meal and constantly think about what you are eating, with the occasional eating out etc.

I'm asking because I've read and seen documentaries that say only a quarter of people manage to keep weight off long term - and this is among highly motivated and disciplined people who can stick with a plan for months and managed to lose their goal. For the rest of the populace the numbers are much lower.

Everyone says you need to have a healthy lifestyle that's sustainable but is that just another way of saying be on a permanent diet for the rest of your life? (this doesn't mean extreme diets or fad diets of course).
