Went to a family event, my cousin’s wife who I barely know said “you’ve lost a lot of weight,” and although I generally am of the practice of not commenting on peoples bodies ever, I assumed she was trying to be nice so I thanked her and said that I’ve been trying to be healthier. That’s when she looked surprised and clarified “I mean, you looked better BEFORE. I would eat a little more sugar if I were you, you don’t want to look sick one day.” I didn’t know how to respond, rudeness always catches me off guard. (And for the record I’m not skinny, and neither is she by any means). Is it jealousy? Is it just rudeness? How do people think saying something like that is helpful??
