Most people know about the “big 3” eating disorders: Binge eating disorder - characterized by compulsive overeating Bulimia nervosa - characterized by repeated cycles of bingeing and purging by various methods Anorexia nervosa- characterized by excessive food restriction
these can have lots of different characteristics, and sometimes a person can have qualities of more than one disorder simultaneously. There are several other forms of disordered eating as well. You can find info about these here: https://www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/eating-disorders/what-are-eating-disorders
More recently, professionals have categorized another eating disorder commonly called Orthorexia nervosa. Orthorexia involves an unhealthy obsession with eating healthy food. Individuals with Orthorexia may obsess over food choice, planning, purity, and documentation. They may even hold untrue beliefs about the power of food to affect their wellbeing. One key that marks the difference between a choice and a disorder is how it affects your quality of life. If you feel you can’t stop yourself from logging food, reading ingredients, “detoxing” etc. you may be struggling with Orthorexia.
