Am I wasting time at the gym if my diet isn't good?

I have a black and white mindset. I either gotta work out hard or not at all. I gotta eat right and calorie count or don’t even bother. I gotta do this or don’t. I get burned out and eventually just stop – it turns out that its easier to not do than to do. My therapist calls this a stuck mindset and that attempting to eat better might cause me to want to work out, and working out might cause me to want to eat better.

Be real with me. If I continue how I'm eating but add some cardio or weight lifting, am I doing anything for my health? Or is it equivalent to a billionaire adding a penny to their net worth, does absolutely fuck all?
