This has become an on-again-off-again post about Running in LoseIt. Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been extremely busy with work to even consider taking the time to put up something.
All levels of runner are welcome here, from first timers to experienced marathoners. We welcome someone who just ran for the first time or is just starting couch to 5K (r/c25k) as eagerly as someone who has thousands of miles of experience.
This post is for sharing your weekly progress or excitement with running. From training you got in this last week, your first run, a virtual race, or a real race, we'd love to hear what you did. Got a running related NSV (non-scale victory), we'd love to hear. Have a question or need advice, we are here to help.
In addition to sharing your progress each week, I ramble on about some topic related to running. This week's topic - Running Socks!!
What' the deal with running socks?
There's lots of gear or clothing you can buy as a runner. I buy shirts on the cheap and often run/workout in plain t-shirts. My running shorts are nothing special (Old Navy Go Dry Mesh) and are purchased during 30-50% off sales for less than USD$10 per pair. I have a few nicer clothing items but most of my purchases are less than USD$10 per item or less.
But socks are a different story. I really like good running socks and splurge on them.
When I was ramping up my running time beyond 60 minutes, I noticed my feet really taking a beating. So I decided to get a pair of nice socks and see if they made a difference. I grabbed the most common/named running socks out the -- Balega Hidden Comfort. And, WOW, they felt great. My feet felt better at the end of a long run. As I pushed to 90 minutes, and 120 minutes, and half-marathon runs/races, those Balegas paid off again and again.
Those original Balegas are getting over 5 years old and still are holding up. They probably have 2000 miles on them.
Time for a Sock Shoot-Out!
Cooped for for over a year with this Pandemic thing, I decided to make use of some Amazon Gift Credits and splurge again. So, Ipurchased a whole slew of socks to check out what's new out there and try them out.
Here's the list socks that I either own, or purchased.
Comfy Socks - these are soft and comfy socks that offer cushioning and feel great on your feet.
- Injinji Run Lightweight No-Show
- Swiftwick – MAXUS ZERO Golf & Running Socks, Maximum Cushion
- Smartwool Men's PhD Run Cold Weather Mid Crew Light Elite Merino Wool Socks
- Darn Tough Men's Run 1/4 Ultra-Lightweight - X-Large Eclipse Merino Wool Socks for Running
- Balegas Hidden Comfort
Supportive Socks - these are compression style socks, that offer exceptional support.
- Under Armour unisex-adult Run Cushion No Show Tab Socks
- Balega Silver Compression
- Feeture High Performance
Minimal Socks - The slightest of socks, these are sheer second skin and not much more.
- Rockay Accelerate Anti-Blister Running Socks
- Drymax Hyper Thin Running Mini Crew
Here's my top three socks from this shoot out.
- #1 - Balega Hidden Comfort. These socks still reign at the top of the chart. Great comfy feel and some sorta magic that keep your feet from taking a beating on a long run. They are also great at preventing hot spots or blisters. I purchased XL for the 12.5-13 Wide feet and they fit great. These are my everyday running sock of choice.Durablity - excellent.Size - true to size/generous.Feel - softCushion - medium.Compression - light.Hot Temp - good
- #2 - Under Armor (UA) Run Cushion No Show Tab Socks. These are my new compression go to sock. I purchased the large version of these and they work great for me with 12.5-13 wide feet. They offer great structure and compression but are still quite comfortable. They have the added bonus of being great for hotter runs as they are quite airy/thin.Durablity - no wear after 10 miles on them, 3 runs.Size - true to size.Feel - synthetic/polyesterCushion - light/medium on front and heal.Compression - high.Hot Temp - great
- #2 - Swiftwick MAXUS Zero. After my third run with these I noticed they are really good socks and leave my feet feeling great. While they lean comfy, they are way more supportive/compression/structured than most of the comfortable socks. This extra support really make them a great sock for a harder workout but they have great comfortable feel for everyday use.Size - true to size.Feel - softCushion - mediumCompression - mediumHot Temp - good
Some honorable mention --
Best Warm Weather socks - Drymax. These things are sheer but protect like a second skin. Not for a long run, but if you have a hour in the heat planned -- these are exactly the socks for you.
Best Cold Weather Socks - Smartwool PHD Run. I can't get the Darn Tough socks I had before so these look to be my new colder weather sock. They are absolutely luxurious on my feet.
Best Wet Run Socks - Injini are actually very comfy. But the fit is finicky. I've had to spend a couple of minutes getting them just right before each use. If you have some inter-toe hot spots, though, these are the socks for you. Wow, there's nothing that cuts back on toe-on-toe friction like these. When I run in the rain it is one time my toes really need this extra protection. I am going to use them for all those damp Portland Oregon runs.
