What is an appropriate calorie deficit?

I have been mindful of calories my entire adult life. Was thin and fit in college, and gained and lost the same 30 pounds or so over the past 8 years or so after graduation. Sometimes gain a little due to stress, holidays, work change etc. Then lose a bit when the weather got better, work settled down a bit, or I got a little more motivation from tight fitting clothes.

I just had a baby about 6 months ago, and up around 25 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight. I’m looking to lose 50 pounds at this point, and could use some help setting an appropriate goal. I fear that a 500 calorie deficit is too small, and that it doesn’t leave enough room for human error or the occasional slip up. I was thinking of a 1000 calorie deficit on days that I work, since I work a pretty physical job with a TDEE range of about 2700-3000 calories on those days. And on my days off doing a 500 calorie deficit since my TDEE is closer to about 2000.

Does this sound reasonable? I have never been able to let myself only have a 500 calorie deficit, so it’s just a little worrisome I think

For reference I am a woman and 5ft3 and currently 167 pounds.
