Does anyone else who was only barely overweight feel like they didn’t get support from friends or family?

I started counting calories a bit over 2 weeks ago at 5’11 and 181 pounds (I’m a dude). If I were super muscular, that might be a lean weight, but it’s not for me. I was at about 21% body fat, and it doesn’t show in my face, so no one believes me.

I’ve tried to take control of my health like 3 or 4 times, but it’s finally working now, and I’m finding that the difference is I moved out of my hometown for a new job, where the pressures to eat the same things as everyone else aren’t here. My parents are loving and well-meaning folks, but they’re very southern, and they couldn’t imagine me not wanting every meal fried with extra butter, hahah. Even living on my own, I still ate at home with them all the time. When I tried to watch what I ate a bit more, I got so many comments like “what?? You’re not even overweight! You’re thin!” And that was just not true, but they genuinely didn’t know.

I’m aiming for maybe <15% body fat before I’ll start trying to focus more on gaining muscle mass. I’m down to 173 pounds and <20% bf now, and although I’m sure a lot is just water weight and measurement errors, it’s encouraging to see progress :)
