Is there an ideal ratio between exercise and diet, in terms of calorie deficit?

EG:
- Eating 1000 calories fewer and doing zero exercise

- Eating as normal and doing 1000 cals worth of exercise

- 50/50 (coincidentally?)

- Some other ratio. Or a ratio dependent on the deficit (eg. if you're opting for 500 deficit vs 1000 deficit are your answers different)

For the sake of argument I would like to ignore difficulty (eg. it's not an argument that 1000 cals of exercise every day would be harder to maintain than a mixture). We're assuming that your decision is plugged into the WeightBot5000 and whatever you ask for is what will happen to you. I would also like to ignore any edge cases where it may not be safe to do that amount of exercise (unless you believe this affects most people).

My initial position would be that eating the same and losing the full deficit through exercise would be ideal. You're eating enough to have a good chance of getting the right nutrients (even without specific effort to), and getting the maximum health benefits of exercise (cardiovascular, muscles, etc). I'm not sure simply eating fewer calories has any health benefit at all on its own, so it seems the clear winner would be exercise because it comes along with bonus health points.
