Is having "goal clothes" good motivation or detrimental?

Hey everyone. 24f, 5'3 here. Like many others, I've gained some weight over the past couple of years. I started working from home early 2020, and haven't looked back. I've gained about 15lbs in that time. I've been a weightloss journey before and achieved my goal thanks to this subreddit (175lbs to 125lbs). I'm currently sitting at 140lbs. I'm rather short and it's quite noticeable. I'm taking steps to lose the weight I gained from becoming very sedentary.

A lot of my jeans no longer fit, and some dresses. Even my favorite pair of sandals that wrap around the ankles cut into my skin :( I've heard that taking pictures until said clothes fit is a good motivator, but I've also heard that having goal clothes can be detrimental and discouraging. I don't want to toss out my wardrobe, but seeing the clothes that no longer fit hanging in my closet makes me pretty sad.

I was in a very different situation when I initially lost weight, and didn't even buy clothes that fit for a long time. I never bought anything smaller than the size I was at the time.

What has been your experience with goal clothes? Did they motivate you or discourage you?

Edit: Just wanted to clarify that I meant having my old wardrobe as goal clothing, I definitely won't be buying anything that's a smaller size than I wear now!
