I was thinking of making a 24-hour commitment of eating only 2/3 of every meal, bc if I leave some leftover, it could help break the mentality of being obligated to eat everything off my plate (as this is what I struggle with). I notice that even if I'm full to the point of being sick, I will force myself to finish the entire plate.
On second thought, the idea of wasted food haunts me (I'm not sure if it does anyone else). I used to work at a fast-food joint and if the food was deemed not appropriate for serving (i.e., minute things such as a broken scone or a sandwich coming apart a little), I would offer to eat it so it didn't go to waste even if I didn't want it. It sounds petty, but it was a little horror I tried to avoid every day.
I also grew up on the "what about the starving kids in Africa?" narrative, but looking back on it now, it was a tactic to get kids to finish their plate with dessert as a reward (MORE FOOD?!?!?!) and I realized this kinda backfired. At restaurants, me and my siblings are still teased by my Father for having a "baby tummy" if we couldn't finish our heaping servings when we can simply put it in a box and take it home.
What can I do to break out of this mentality?????????
