Does Long-Term Abstinence Really Work?

Stats: 33F/5'4"/157 lb/SW 165 lb/GW 120 lb/standard office job, but we did recently get the option for standing or treadmill desks so I am walking more often (if that makes any difference)

Does abstinence from certain foods really work in the long, long term? Is there anybody out there that's been eliminating certain foods entirely, successfully, for several years?

I've had a long time problem with my weight. I started calorie tracking in July of this year. I did my share of "fad" diets, suspected I was addicted to sugar. Now, I've had some success restricting my calories and portions, but I still feel like some foods are really triggering to make me binge. (pretty much the typical things, chips, ice cream, peanut butter, some fruits even) If it's there, I eat it, and I can't stop. Or I know, I can stop, but it just feels really, really impossible to even think about in the moment. I'm sure this is familiar to a lot of people. But where I'm confused is, I see half advice to include all foods in moderation in your diet, but also half advice that some people are just "abstainers" and they do better with avoiding some foods all together. Some people doing this by keto, some people doing sugar/wheat-free, and others.

So I would like to hear, if possible, if there have been any successful abstainers for years and years out. It sounds really plausible to me in theory, there are just some foods I can not, maybe even don't want, to eat in moderation. But, does sticking it out and not eating those foods truly not lead to binging later on, ever? Every time I try, I seem to give in and fail sooner or later. Can you really get past the point you never touch those foods ever again? And if so, any best suggestions for how to reach that point, and not keep relapsing back? Should I believe it's possible, and keep trying? Or, am I making the same mistake over and over again, when I should really be focusing on learning to eat those foods wtihout binging them- which, sounds way harder, but maybe I just need to stick it out?
