Dealing with intense sugar cravings on low carb diet

Hopefully someone out there has dealt with this and can help me out with some strategies!

I’ve been on a low carb diet for a couple months. I started out wanting to do keto, but it’s honestly too restrictive and intense for me. Instead, I try to stay between 60-150 grams of carbs a day, and around 1600 calories. I’ve lost ten pounds and I’m still slowly losing, which I’m fine with. I started at 183 at 5’5 and I’m now 173. All great.

Going low carb has vastly reduced my intake of all kinds of junk food, snack foods, sugary drinks, and processed crap. It’s been great. But it’s not as easy as I thought it would be.

I thought I was a savory food lover and less of a sugar addict, but now I wonder if I was kidding myself, because all of a sudden I am craving sugar. I never used to crave sugar. Now that I’m trying to restrict carbs, all I want is ice cream and cake and donuts and pancakes and chocolate and... anything you could call dessert.

I’ve tried to combat this by allowing myself one reasonable portion of highly palatable sugary crap a day, always for dessert after dinner. Outshine bars have worked to an extent, but it can be anything as long as it doesn’t take me over my calories for the day. Usually it’s a Good Humor strawberry shortcake ice cream bar.

But now that the diet honeymoon phase is over, I find myself saving my calories for sugar, going over my carb goal by quite a lot, and even going over my calories. Today I was at a clients house who always has lots of dessert stuff around and I really screwed up. I ate:

2 lemon filled shortbread cookies 1 chocolate almond biscotti cookie 1 slice apple pie 1/2 cup ice cream 1/2 a large pistachio muffin

I ate 2100 calories of mostly carbs. Most days aren’t this bad but truly, all I fucking want is sugar. Wtf is wrong with me?! I never used to be a sugar junkie I swear.

What can I do? Has anyone else experienced this?
