Dear overweight/obese person at the gym

To many of you, going to the gym is hard. You feel self-conscious about your weight. You feel conspicuous and embarrassed. Some may tell you "Just go! No one's going to care about you! Everyone's focused on their own things!"

I'm here to tell you that's at least in part a lie. We see you.

We see you working your ass off to get the exercises done.

We see you take the breaks you need for air and water, then get right back up and going right back at it.

We see you trying as hard as you can to make you a better, healthier person. And I'm glad we see you.

I'm glad you're there. I'm proud for you. You radiate positive energy off you just for doing something that is definitely hard. It's inspiring and motivates me to push myself, too, and to not give up because exercise is hard and tiring.

You deserve to be at the gym as much as the fittest, most swole gymrat in existence. Feel proud of yourself and keep going. We're all rooting for you.

And, if someone says something condescending or mean to you at the gym, remember that it's not your weight that's the problem. People get bullied constantly for a myriad of reasons. Hair. Face. Weight. Speech. Voice. Humour. Interests. You're not being belittled or bullied because you're overweight, but because the bully needs a target - any target - to make themselves feel better due to their own self-esteem issues.

Don't listen to any bullies. Almost everyone in the gym is really happy to see you there. Keep going, keep pushing yourself, and together, we can all become better, healthier, happier versions of who we are today.
