New at this.. Question about certain foods?

So I just started this "lifestyle change". Looking to lose about 30 pounds. My friend at work recently dropped about that much and she said she just stayed under her calories using the "lose it" app. So I've tried it. It's only been a week and 2 days but I have consistently stayed under my calorie intake.. I haven't cheated or gone above that limit for 9 days now. According to this app, I'm supposed to lose a pound and a half by staying under the calorie limit it gave me.

However this morning I decided to weigh myself, and I've gone up 2.5 pounds than I did before I even started calorie counting. Talk about discouraging. Yes I know it's only been a week... But I thought I'd at least see a pound down. :/

So I vented about it at work around my friend and she said it may be the foods I'm eating. Her example was, you can't eat fried stuff and expect to lose weight. But most things I've read into, even weight watchers... Pretty much says, hey you can have that slice of pizza but you're gonna need to have a salad for dinner. And so on.

So again, what's true? Bottom line I thought if you ate at a deficit, you'll lose weight? Even if it is a cookie here and a bag of chips there, etc. Is this true?

And no I haven't been pounding down fried foods. I'm really only eating twice a day with maybe a snack in between. Sandwiches, salads, grilled chicken, fish, veggies, etc. So I dunno what I'm doing wrong that I went up 2.5 pounds 😔
