I know that the answers to this question will be very subjective, but I’m just looking for a little bit of comparison to my own experience so I can understand how relatively usual/unusual the way I feel is.
Some context: I’ve got some problems with physical anxiety, they’re pretty under control these days, but whenever I try to lose weight I run into this problem where when I start to experience hunger I’m fine the first few weeks, then about 3/4 weeks in my body just tries to shut down and I freak out, binge for a few days trying to feel normal again, and gain back the weight I lost in the previous weeks.
When I say my body tries to ‘shut down’ what I mean is: a day or two of extreme lethargy and brain fog (to the extent that I never recognize it for what it is in the moment, only after it’s too late), followed by a moment, sometimes upon waking, sometimes out of nowhere in the middle of the day, where my chest feels like it’s burning, my heart starts palpitating, I get severe shakes coming in waves, and it, ironically, becomes barely possible to get food down so I have to spend the first day just constantly consuming soup/yoghurt/whatever I can manage until I can get something more solid down.
I use calorie tracking apps quite religiously because I realized, after repeating this cycle a few times, that until it becomes dire I really have a hard time recognizing hunger and suspected I might be under-eating. It’s helped a little, but even making sure I meet at least 1200 calories, this still happens.
I’m 25, 5’0”, 135lbs currently, and now never allow myself to dip below 1200 calories/day. I’ve seen a doctor about this, but unfortunately he pretty much just gave me a blood test and an ECG and said since nothing showed up there was nothing else to be done.
I’m mainly here to see if this is relatively normal and I’m only feeling this stressed over it because of my anxiety issues, or if this is actually cause for concern. I’m planning on seeing another doctor for a second opinion in about a month (appointment booked already etc), but in the meantime I figured it couldn’t hurt to see if anyone else has had a similar experience.
I appreciate any answers :)
