Can binge eating instincts be changed, or do you eventually just work less hard at them?

Ever since really, truly committing to a lifestyle change where I'm eating a balanced (and far healthier) diet, very very few desserts, etc, I have felt my tastes shift. Like a lot of others on this sub, I've reached a place where I actually crave veggies, simple proteins, and lots of fruit. And fruit tastes about 1000x sweeter than it used to.

That said, I of course still like to indulge in the occasional treat, calorie counting be damned. But the problem is that when I used to binge sweets, at least half of the satisfaction came from the volume, and the way that volume would feel in my mouth. As in: chewing an incredibly large bite and savoring the actual act of stuffing myself (I would guess I'm not alone here) was as good or better than the food itself.

When I do let myself eat sweets now, I have to fight so hard against the desire to hide somewhere and physically stretch my jaws to their limit. It makes enjoying the "cheat" much less....enjoyable, because I'm focusing so hard on the internal monologue of re-training myself not to give in to craving such excessive volume ("okay do NOT shove this whole thing in your mouth don't do it one small bite chew slowly chew it slowly slower than that okay swallow it now wait for the next bite wait for the next bite, cut that one in half that bite is too big cut it half, chew it slowly. okay now again, do that again, one small bite").

I guess my question is...with enough practice and behavior shift, does that desire ever go away?? Do you ever reach a point where you eat a treat without having to think so hard about your strategy in consuming it? Has anyone else struggled with this specifically?
