What does "X amount of (nutrient) per pound of body weight" mean when you're fat?

Ok so whenever something says you should get X amount of (nutrient / supplement/ whatever) per pound or kg of weight, what does that mean for fat people? Like do you scale the amount with weight, or just go off what weight you should be?

For example, a common thing is 0.8g protein per pound of body mass while building muscle. So a 200lb person would need 160g of protein, but if that person ate like garbage and got fat and became 300lb, do they now need 240g protein? Or do they stick with the 160g amount because that's the weight they're supposed to be?

I thought maybe for protein it's supposed to be based on lean muscle mass for a healthy person, because you don't really need protein for fat right? But then other things like medicine and such do apply to fat as well because that's still part of your body that needs attention if you're sick.

I honestly have no idea. Having been widely different stages of overweight in my life, it's always been a guess on how much of something I should have if it says "X amount per pound of body weight". Pretty annoying actually.
