Today, I saw the poster for a Disney short film called "Reflect", which features Disney's first plus-sized heroine. I went into the comments section, and it was absolutely disheartening and mean. Most of the comments were along the lines of 'just lose the goddamn weight', 'just eat less', 'stop glorifying obesity' etc.
So a fat person can never be the main character? Do you always need to be "normal" to be a protagonist? So fat people are only cut out for the roles of the side kick, the unattractive best friend or the evil villain? How is it promoting obesity and laziness? Even without apparent underlying conditions, it's not easy to lose weight.
I have been overweight since I was a toddler. I've been fatshamed by family, friends, strangers, since as long as I can remember. It's just my genetics and slow metabolism bruh. I also later learnt that I have hypothyroidism. That doesn't mean I've resigned, and in no way means that I want to remain fat. I have tried countless times to lose weight. It's not easy, not at all. I've lost some, gained some more, and so on. And I'm still trying.
Edit: Again, I'm not saying obesity is okay or should be normalised. I'm saying portrayal of fat characters in movies and shows should be normalised. Can't a fat protagonist just go about their life, like any other protagonist? Why do you have to make it all about their weight?
Also, the girl is a ballet dancer, and apparently a good one at that. Ballet is tough and takes great strength, balance and strenuous practice. So she's clearly not all lazy.
