For context, I'm from a southern/Midwestern city where just about everyone gets around by car. I would even go as far to say that a car is a requirement to live where I live.
I just got back from visiting New York City for a few days and I had a couple thoughts.
1) I realized there are people in my city who physically could not have done this trip... I can think of at least three people I know who I know for a fact could not do this bc they can barely walk around a small museum here. In the span of our trip, we saw The MET (shit ton of walking on its own but 100% worth it), The Statue of Liberty, walked the Brooklyn Bridge, and walked through Times Square, and proximate to Central Park but not through it. To get basically anywhere we took the subway and walked. This trip was a TON of walking. Upward of 20k steps a day. It made me so grateful I am young and in physical shape such that I could make this trip with little difficulty other than a touch of jet lag and sore feet. If you are going to visit the city, I highly recommend either bringing good socks, trainers, and chafing undies, or plenty of cab fare.
2) Related to the above, I realized that bigger people like how you see down south is a rarity in NYC--despite the rich variety of amazing food y'all have in this city. Maybe it was confirmation bias, but I did not see that many larger people.
3) Also related, I realized probably most NYCers have built in excersize in their routine and it motivated me to work more walking into my organic life (as opposed to deliberate exercise) when I got back!
4) If you need another point of motivation to lose weight, think about how much easier traveling will be and how much easier it will be to get around. You could walk NYC or hike to a mountain glacier in Colorado (something I've also done, exponentially easier in onederland, lol)
I know weight loss is CICO at its core and that diet trumps all, but just stressing the importance of an active life style for overall vitality and health! And just some thoughts I had.
