I recently moved from a very dry, fairly warm place to a very rainy, fairly cold place. I decided to splurge on some high quality outerwear, since ya know. There is no bad weather, only bad gear. I went to REI, a place I have bought most of my outdoorsy stuff, swallowed hard to overcome my sticker shock, and tried on a nice Patagonia coat.
It didn't fit.
None of them fit.
The largest size they had was XL and I couldn't get the zipper to close. I like my coats down covering the hips, and... they were not going to close over them.
I don't know why I kept trying. Hoping a different brand would work, maybe? The best I could do was one that I could zip over myself, but it bunched up to the waist instead of hanging naturally.
I bought a department store puffer coat and a men's XXL rain jacket from Field and Stream instead. The coat is fine and will keep me warm, and the rain jacket will make an adequate waterproof layer for longer times outside this winter.
I'm glad I got what I needed to stay warm, dry, and active up here, but Goddamn. That one hurt. I felt so upset and humiliated realizing nothing in an entire store could cover my body.
And I don't even "look" that fat; I'm obese but regularly get the ol "no you're noooooot!"
But I am, and it's time and past to change that.
