Is it common for weight to boomerang following exercise?

I've (31M) been consistently running and dieting since May and I've noticed that on days following a run, I drop like 3-4 pounds. But on days where I don't run I drop maybe half a pound or stay the same. Then it kind swings back up above where I started for a few days and then dips again to a new, lower "normal"

For instance yesterday I weighed in at 229.5lbs and I ran last night and then this morning I clocked in at 225. I am sure tomorrow I will be in the 228 range based on past experience. I've noticed that I am getting thinner but don't seem to be putting muscle on.

Is this common? I can't imagine a moderate run would burn THAT many calories. Especially now that I am conditioned to it.
