Is a gym membership worth it?

Currently, the only exercise I’m doing is an hour of walking in the evening (which is only about two miles, because my dog dictates the pace) followed by some pool exercise (twenty minutes of swimming interspersed with eight minutes of jogging in the water). When it gets colder here, probably from mid-January to late February, my pool is likely to be cold enough that I’ll only want to get in to clean it.

I’m considering joining a gym, if anything near me has a good deal around New Years… but would it really be worth it at that point? I’ve already lost thirty-five pounds from just counting calories and doing the exercises described above, and I really have no idea how effective gym equipment is.
