I am struggling hard with the seemingly never ending unhealthy junk food at the office. I was laid off in April, had one job that wasn't a great fit for three months, and now work for another company, all three companies in the construction industry in some capacity. I've noticed the following office culture habits and it's impacting my ability to lose weight, as I don't want to seem antisocial or not a good fit:
- people who bake or buy too much junk for a party, then bring the leftovers to the office
- people bringing junk to the office, usually donuts
- someone, or the company, maintaining a snack bowl of some sort
- very few, if any, coworkers eat healthy, or even try to
- very few, if any, coworkers pack lunch from home of any kind or do any meal prep
- lunch is always unhealthy huge burritos, burgers, deep fried chicken or some other form of unhealthy junk
And this is on the daily. It's a miracle if I go one day in the office without being offered some sort of horribly unhealthy thing, and people seem to be really upset at the prospect of throwing away unwanted donuts and look at me like I am a monster for refusing a perfectly good donut.
At Job #2, part of my job involved ordering the food for the monthly progress meeting, and after awhile I got tired of the deep fried stuff the office was ordering and opted out, but still came to the meetings. Management was not happy I opted out.
At all three jobs I developed a reputation as the dieter/health nut who meal preps, and many coworkers were offended and upset I would not eat the junk food they brought into the office, or partake in the work lunches with various people in the office.
I created a log earlier this year to track how often people offer me junk food at work, and also how often people invite me to eat out with them, and I'm not kidding, it's 4-5 days a week, sometimes multiple times in a day.
I would really like to be a team player, but I really need to lose 40 pounds, and so far I've managed to gain, and that's with me refusing the junk food half the time.
Does anyone have any advice for dealing with this? I'd like to show I am a team player - but while eating healthy, taking care of myself and losing weight. The amount of junk I see at work - at three different companies this year alone - has just been horribly excessive.
My "meal prep" lunch is a sandwich on multigrain bread and protein bar. That's it.
