[Century Club] July 22, 2021 - Have you lost or need to lose 100 lbs or more? Here’s a thread just for you!

I have often welcomed those who have lost 100+ lbs (~ 50 kg , ~7 stone) to “the club” and joked that club meetings were on Thursdays. I recently suggested that we try out having a regular weekly thread to talk about issues that are particular to those who have lost 100+ lbs, those who are well on their way and those who are just at the beginning of a journey this big.

Welcome back to the Century Club! Each week I will provide a topic of the day that has been on my mind or inspired by previous posts. However you are free to talk about any topics you think might be relevant to current and prospective club members.

Previous Topics: Elevator Pitches - (Half-)Marathon Training - Celebrations - Water Weight - Comments - Travel - Disconnects - Activity - Years! - Fun! - Rhythms - How strict? - Relationships - Loose Skin Redux - Multiple Centuries - April Fools! - What didn't work? - Milestones - Seasonal changes - Is it worth it? - Surprising Food Facts - Mistakes were made - Time to Vent - Relief Valves - Seeing Objectively - Tips you hate - Fear and Self-Loathing - Starting - 2020 recap

Accountability

This was a common thread in many of last week's elevator pitches. Being accountable.

This morning I saw a meme on facebook that said: "I don't care who is doing better than me. I am doing better than I was last year. It's me vs. me." and it resonated with me.

For me, accountability has always been to myself. Holding myself accountable for my own actions. I didn't involve a personal trainer, nutritionist or any other outside specialist to help hold myself accountable to me, just my process and three apps.

  • Eufylife to grab my daily weight from my smart scale
  • Fitbit and my Fitbit Charge 2/3 to passively track my activity and sleep patterns.
  • MFP to track my calorie intake and track my macros.

MFP is the one I treated as my dashboard. First control my food intake. Everything else is secondary.

In maintenance I don't always log my evening meal as completely as I would have done while actively losing weight. So I tend to snap a picture of my meal and throw it in Ate http://youate.com just so I can still hold myself accountable for the meal.

Holding myself accountable is mostly about being honest with myself that I and only I control how I choose to fuel my body and those choices and actions are indirectly responsible for my weight trends. Awareness of them lets me make small changes to what I'm doing rather than punish myself for "being bad" or similar thoughts.

"You know I was pretty sedentary this past week and ate slightly above my target maybe I should try to nudge my calories down 100-150 kcal or so for a bit."

When the little devil showed up on my shoulder saying "you know you want a second helping" I could show him my food logs and say "I've had enough so far for today and if I do have that second helping I won't have room for the dinner I was planning".

What about you Centurion? What does accountability look like for you? If you've completed or nearly completed your journey has that changed at all over time? Did you make use of an accountability buddy or work with a professional or just the data like me?
