Losing weight quickly after taking a 3 week diet break. Question?

Long story short, before Christmas I was struggling to lose weight at my normal rate (I've lost 53lb since July 1, my goal is 100lb). I was frustrated and took a break from my diet for 3 weeks over the holidays. I didn't calorie count and returned to a lot of my old habits. I would guess I consumed around 3500kcal a day and only went for walks 2/3x a week.

Since returning back to normality a week ago, I've gone back to my normal diet of 40min exercise 5x a week and 1200-1500 a day (with cheat day at the weekend). The thing is, I seem to be losing weight rapidly again like I was when I first started dieting in July. I was roughly 214lb for all of November & December, then 219.5lb at the end of Christmas. Today I weighed in at 211lb.

My question is, is there any science or logic behind this? I assume its not good for me to yo-yo like this so I don't plan on making a habit of it, but i'm so happy to be out of my plateau and back on track ...and honestly relieved to have had a break from the constant dieting as i felt exhaused from it and now I feel more motivated than ever. I guess i'm wondering from a health point of view, how is this looked upon? Is it something that people who diet do every couple of months, or is it frowned upon to jump between the two extremes like that?
