Starving yourself is unhealthy, but how do you not go hungry when losing weight?

Hi everyone, I have recently gained a few pounds. I do light-moderate exercise and have a very healthy, balanced diet overall, so I'm not sure why this happened (age?), but I don't like the way I feel about it (I feel more mass when I move, and I even have an extra inch on my waist) or look.
I am trying to lose about 5, or so, pounds, but I've never had to do this, and I am trying to do this healthily.

I know the basic formula: calories in vs calories out. But I also know that "starving" yourself is unhealthy - at least mentally (and probably physically).
How do I cut down on calories/burn more without feeling hungry? Is there a healthy medium between feeling hungry and starving? How do I achieve that?
