Calculating BMR

I'm 5'6", female, 31, lightly active, and weigh about 175 lbs. When I calculate my BMR, it says 1,581. When I look at caloric needs, websites will say I need 2,773 calories to maintain my current weight. I'm a bit confused by all this. I've looked at several different websites and have seen a lot of conflicting information. Is the BMR number the number of calories I should eat? I thought BMR would be the amount of calories I burn at rest, and I would need to subtract 500 calories to be in a deficit. But eating only 1000 calories a day sounds impossible to do (I've been counting calories and I don't think I can go below 1300 without physically feeling sick)...idk.
