When I listen to my hunger, I don't eat enough

It is a very common advice to try and only eat when you are hungry, and to listen to your body. My problem is, when I do that, I end up eating very little. For example, if taking my activity into account, I sometimes end up with negative net calories (yesterday I ate only 400 calories because I was not hungry all day but wad pretty active with walking, swimming and biking), or net calories that are somewhere from 100 to 800.

But I also have days where I can eat up to over 2000 calories, because this is when my appetite takes over. I have the hunger of a very thin person, and the appetite of a very big one, so lookswise I fall somewhere in the middle. Right now I'm at the upper end of the healthy BMI, but I used to be almost obese (29 BMI) because for years I listened to my appetite instead of my hunger.

I also notice that I sometimes don't want to eat because it feels like I'm ruining a bigger deficit for nothing, since I'm not even hungry.

I'm aware that this is not healthy, but I kinda don't know what to do. Anyone have a similar problem?
