Hi all! Typical bit about being a lurker and first time posting, as well as being on mobile, here.
So, I’ve being going through the slow process of losing weight and I’ve been down about 70 lbs since I began in December of 2018 (220 lbs -> 150 lbs, 5’3”). I’ve never really felt different though. I’ve never really found any startling differences in how I feel, like feeling lighter or more mobile, but that was put into perspective pretty soon.
For my work, I was assisting a masters student in her experiment. For part of it, my coworkers and I had to lug out gallons of water into the woods. As I’m hiking, I’m thinking about how exhausting it was to be carrying 5 full gallons of water around. When my friend looked it up, 1 gallon of water was approximately 8 lbs, so we were carrying roughly 40 lbs of water around with us while we were hiking and climbing up and down to the testing sites.
That was only half of what I’ve lost, but dear god, was that heavy to carry at once! At some point, it struck me that the 40 lbs I was carrying used to be on me. I used to have 40 lbs of me that I would carry around much more readily than that water, but I no longer do. I lost that, and more even! It was a jarring realization, to say the least.
I’ve felt like I’ve been in a bit of a slump lately, but that really helped put my loss into perspective. While having a backpack full of water kind of sucked, it was eye opening to think that all of that used to be on me. And sure, I’m still not at my goal weight, but I’m doing much better than when that 40 lbs was on me!
Even if you don’t think you’ve lost that much, carry some weight around with you on your next walk, or even just around the house. It’ll get tiring or annoying after a bit, probably, but it serves as a good reminder that you lost that weight. You used to carry it with you, but now you’re a better and stronger person who doesn’t need that weight anymore. I know that it really helped for me to think about it.
Anyway, just wanted to share this bit! I wish everyone out there luck on their own journey and remind you that even if you don’t see results immediately, they’re coming your way, just keep at it!! You’ve got this :)
