“You don’t need to lose more weight - You’re perfect the way you are!” and other struggles

Two years ago I made the really tough decision to lose weight after pressure from my family and stress about my health. A few years ago someone in my family was begging my partner and I to lose at least ten pounds before a wedding, and was very sincerely concerned for our health and our habits. It hurt a lot to hear, but it was a bit of a wake up call and a re-evaluation looking at the pictures.

I’ve since developed chronic pain, a few other health issues, and balance problems. I rely on my mobility aids to get me around and I’ve lost my weight through diet alone (CICO) since exercise is a challenge for me. I’ve noticed a difference in my fatigue since losing weight (still there and a big challenge, but it has helped)

Last year I lost 65 lbs (29kgs). I’m 5’8 (1.75m?). I’m now 170 lbs (77 kgs). It’s no small feat for me. I’ve still got a little ways to go. I’m planning on incorporating more strength based routines to rebuild some of my muscle loss at home using body weight fitness, as I’m able.

I mentioned this to my family and was met with “Nooo, you don’t need to lose more weight, you’re perfect the way you are!” I feel like I need to do this and this attitude might hold me back in some way. They hurt like how little jabs about how overweight I was hurt, and encouraged me to eat more. I have a hard time making sense of it sometimes.

Some of my family members also struggle with their weight while some are very athletic, so it feels like both groups should understand my desire to get fit and be healthy. I’m not doing this out of pressure. I’m not even sure where this is coming from or how to respond.

If anyone has any insight, advice, or similar stories I would love to hear from you. Thanks for listening.
