I'm a 22 year old 5'11 male weighing somewhere around 190-195 pounds, with somewhere around a 34-35 inch waist. I estimate my BF% at 20-23%. I'd like to cut that in half. The weight itself isn't that important to me.
I've been barbell strength training and running off and on for a little over a year. I've taken time off for injuries and also for lack of discipline. I started barbell training because I don't have a whole lot of muscle or strength (some, but not much, especially in my upper body). I started running to get better at passing my PT test and to burn more calories.
My problem is this: I can't eat enough to bulk up with muscle and then cut back body fat because it's going to make me super slow and also break the Air Force height and weight regs. But I also have a hard time strength training for an extended period of time on any substantial calorie deficit (15-20%), and it's mentally harder for me because I know I won't be getting nearly as much muscle gain while on a deficit. It's frustrating for me since I'm feeling impatient to get both a lot bigger and stronger as well as leaner. So, I've been yo-yoing between eating a surplus, maintenance, and a deficit. I'm also feeling discouraged because I know I have some substantial progress to regain in the gym before I start advancing.
What's my best strategy for losing body fat while making strength gains in the gym even if I can't make much muscle gain? Aside from adequate protein and enough sleep of course.
I should note I'm still very much a novice lifter, at my previous peak I could deadlift barely over 2 plates and my best squat was 210.
