Tips on Working Out for Free/Cheap

I've noticed some people talk about not being able to afford a gym membership, etc. and thought I would share some ways I have worked out/currently work out for nothing/almost nothing. May also be helpful for those who are afraid to work out at a gym yet.

  • Walking/running outside of course is free, assuming you have decent shoes, weather, and safety in your area.
  • YouTube has a ton of no-equipment workouts you can do at home (cardio stuff will help burn calories, but strength is good as well). Find a few videos that work for you and download them to your computer for offline access.
  • If you like dance workouts but can't afford a dance studio, but find YouTube dance tutorials hard/annoying to follow, look up JustDance videos. Those are game play from that Wii game (now also available on other consoles) and they're fantastic for easy to follow dance routines. You just mirror the movements. I used to have a bunch of these videos saved to basically "play" for free.
  • You can start doing the workouts (YouTube and otherwise) that require hand weights, without the weights. It makes it easier for you to get started.
  • Light handweights are under $20, but you can use water bottles as light hand weights. I've done this. You can also fill them with sand if you want.
  • Commit to doing a set number of push ups, squats, sit ups, etc. in a day, few times a week.
  • A lot of studios/gyms offer free trials- take all of them! Even if you can't afford membership, they're still workout classes and often can give you ideas on how to work out on your own.
  • If you work in a large office building, especially in a large city, there's a chance that there's already a free gym in your building available for building tenants- which is all employees. While apartment gyms are always advertised, office gyms are almost never advertised to employees because there is no need to and they don't want to crowd them. I've seen people work somewhere for nearly a decade without realizing they had a free gym the entire time.
  • If you already own a gaming console, the aforementioned JustDance is a good cardio workout (I myself own a VR system with fitness games, which is another reason I can't justify paying for fitness classes).
  • There are home fitness equipment collecting dust in a lot of places- some people even give them away online to get rid of them. I have a stationary bike that I took from my parents' house, they didn't even remember buying it. Buying a used home fitness equipment can be often way cheaper than few months of gym membership.

Hope this helps! Feel free to add more if you have any :)
