New Diet, New Life

My first post here, so please be gentle.

About a month ago I decided to go ahead and get food/environmental allergy testing done. I've been feeling run down, food was wreaking havoc on my digestive system (unless it was something extremely simple, like a rice cake or vegetable), so I wanted to finally know what to avoid and how to change my eating habits to just plain feel better.

Well, turns out I'm allergic to soybeans, cashews, almonds, and brazil nuts. I am also highly lactose intolerant and have been since I was a baby, but don't have an actual dairy allergy. So, I started reading labels. EVERYTHING seems to have soy in it these days. Even bread has soybean oil in it. So I've made a few changes.

I'm cooking more at home using fresher ingredients, using olive oil to cook things, not eating out much (so much soy!), and just cleaning up my diet. And there was an interesting side effect.

After a week without any soy (or extremely minimal) I lost about 20 lbs of just pure bloat. The doctor weighed me at his office. A week later I weighed my self again with a huge difference. I felt better, had a bit more energy, didn't feel like I was dragging, and my digestion seems to be working a bit better. This inspired me to join the local YMCA and sign up for a program they have called Move2Lose, which starts in February.

With the diet changes and soon to be exercise changes, I'm hoping to just plain become healthier. But there is still one thing holding me back a bit. I'm extremely obese. (5'3"/335). I want to start something before the Move2Lose program starts so I'm in the habit, so to speak.

I'm looking for a starting point, so any advice is appreciated. I know I can go walking (and I have a dog, so she will get exercise as well), but what else is there that I can do, especially when the weather gets not conducive to walking (like drifts of snow and ice)?

Thank you kindly in advance.
