I want to jump right into this. I’ve never been stick thin, about 135-140, but I carry my weight in my lower half so it wasn’t obvious. I began taking an oral contraceptive pill over a year ago. I gained 10-15 lbs from what I believe was possibly growing and the pill over the span of about 6 months. I later switched to the Depo shot, which, I believe, caused mild depression. (Side note: I was never diagnosed with depression, but I began experience a few symptoms such as lack of motivation, tiredness, anger, etc. This could be related to both the weight gain and the shot.) I believe the shot, along with the mild depression, and a change in lifestyle (went from mostly vegan to working fast food and eating greasy food daily) caused me to gain so much weight. Lately, I have been experiencing a terrible pain in my lower left side that comes and goes. It feels like a sharp stabbing pain. I also notice an inability to do simple activities, like going up the stairs or running short distances, without a shortness of breath. I have really bad pains in my knees after sitting long periods of time that I never had before. I went to urgent care today and was told all my symptoms (a few other I won’t name because I am not comfortable doing so!) are likely due to excess weight.
I want to be healthier, I know how, I know what to eat that makes me feel good, I know how to lose the weight and work out, but I’m not motivated. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol at the age of nine, and I haven’t been checked since about 10/11. I know heart disease runs in our family, and I worry that I’ll die from a heart attack at a young age. I always thought I would have more time before I possibly suffered a heart attack or other heart/artery related issue, but I believe now that a heart attack at 30 is a real possibility for me. How do I stay motivated to be healthier? How can I enjoy being a teen while eating healthier? Any help is appreciated, thank you.
(For reference, I am 5’5/5’6 and 179–181 lbs. depending when I weigh myself. I’m either teetering on or am obese according to my BMI.)
