Hi All,
I have been obese my entire adult life and through the latter half of high school after I tore my ACL playing football. There have been times where I haven’t really cared about how my weight has affected my life. But that was because I still get capable of anything I put my mind to.
Well at 28M, 5’ 10”, 406 lbs that started to change. My weight has been affecting my career opportunities and people who would take a chance on me, I work in the performing arts. I had to make my friends end a hike we were on because I couldn’t bear to climb one more foot. I broke my normally sized ex-girlfriend’s box spring for her bed. I could only walk for 15 minutes at the mall before my back started to scream in pain for a place to sit down. I can’t reach my ass to wipe properly while sitting down, and even my acrobatics doesn’t seem to cut it. Furthermore, my arms weren’t long enough to reach around my growing belly to properly aim whilst urinating standing up.
These are only a few of the real logistical things that became unacceptable for my life. Emotional issues aside. But thankfully something feels different this time.
In late April, I started to get treated for ADHD and was prescribed Adderal. And in hopes that I would finally be able to stick to a routine I decided to make changes in my life. Changes that have me down to 377.4 lbs in two months time.
What’s worked for me:
1: The mindset shift. Every other time I’ve tried to lose weight, Grapefruit diet, Keto. It was all about getting to a goal weight ASAP. And while I would be quite pleased to get there sooner rather than later, the timeline no longer matters to me. I just want to feel physically capable again. This also includes calorie restriction. My goal eating every day is my calculated TDEE. And I’ll be honest, some days it is even difficult to eat that many calories.
2: No food is off limits. As long as I am in my TDEE, which is currently 2700ish kcal, I can eat any food. Of course I’m not just eating cookies. But I haven’t felt like any food is off limits.
3: Delete DoorDash. DoorDash is a great way to make an $8 burrito into a $20 burrito, and also the foods tend to have tons more calories than an equivalent you could make yourself.
4: Make Kick-Ass Sandwiches! This is my favorite one. Not only have I saved a ton of money by making sandwiches at home, but I feel like I am eating like a king! A good sandwich with ham and cheese, lettuce and Mayo is extremely satisfying to me. And I also get the satisfaction of trying new things. (Thanks to TikTok’s Roll for sandwich). With chips fruit and vegetables my lunches and dinners have been a very filling 500-700 calories. Well within my budget.
5: Go on walks. It doesn’t have to be far. Just get moving. I started working to get a mile. But now I’m walking 2-3 miles every day. And I found out that my dog gets tired more easily than I do. Because my walks are getting easier and easier, I have started to do light hiking and add stair cases.
I’m sure I do more but these things have really stood out to me.
2 months in, my back no longer groans from walking long distances. I don’t begrudge having to walk to my car to get things. And I feel like I can say yes so much more when I’m on stage.
I have a long way to go. But I have a feeling that something different, something more sustainable, is going to happen this time around. Wish me luck.
