Gonna try again

5’3” (45/M) - SW 235, CW 215, GW 135

Two years ago, I went from 225 to 200.2 over a three-month period. I was at that weight for a month, and no matter what I did I couldn’t find a 1 at the beginning of the scale. It was so incredibly discouraging. I had a piece of pizza and promptly gave up.

July 6 of last year, a band parent snapped of picture of me from the side and posted it on our band’s FB page. (It was one of many pics of our first rehearsal of the season). I knew I was overweight, but damn, to see myself from an outside perspective was eye-opening. I weighed myself to see that I was 235. Once again I went low-carb, got down to 203, and couldn’t get below it. I didn’t quite give up like before, but I certainly didn’t try very hard for a while. Went up to 225. A Planet Fitness opened up near my house, and my wife and I joined immediately. We would bike 4 days/week and do the circuit 3 days/week. Nutrition was secondary. Went down to 209, and I loved how I had developed stamina to walk, energy to move, and some basic strength.

The more so focused on working out, the less I focused on nutrition, and went back up to 220. I have since joined an app called 1st Phorm. I log in all of my food (similar to MyFitnessPal, which I have used before), take weekly pictures and weigh-ins, and most importantly talk with an advisor who examines what I am doing each week. He doesn’t hold back, which I naturally have mixed feelings about, but it has been helpful to have guidance.

I really really enjoy the app, especially the workout routines (I chose weights). I got MUCH stronger, and I saw results in my side pics. I learned how to focus on my macros and cook for that. After 10 weeks of busting my ass, I only went from 220 to 216. The fact that I look and feel better suddenly became less important than the fact that I couldn’t get the scale to budge. No amount of compliments or “Muscle weighs more than fat” comments overcame the mindset of the almighty scale. The school year ended, and I had a trip planned to an all-inclusive resort. So, I said “Screw it” for 4 weeks and did what I wanted.

Predictably I went up to 226. One week ago today, I got back into the gym and focused only on my calories (1500 max - 600 less than before) and proteins (135g) with a large reduction in carbs (which the advisor told me not to worry about as long as I was handling calories and proteins correctly), and not having any processed foods. I am down to 214.6 today, and my workout is back to where I left it before. I love that last part the most, as I was super-proud of my gains.

I come to you for a few reasons. 1) To share my story because many of you have inspired me. 2) To celebrate the fact I will start this season 20 lbs less than the last one as well as lament it only being 20 lbs. 3) To have some level of accountability by putting this out there in public. 4) To seek you guidance in how to not fail again and give up.

Thank you to those of you who read this. Thank you in advance to those of you who share your thoughts.
