Eating at maintenance whilst training

I've just started a proper training program after a year off due to surgery. I want to lose some fat, but first, I am focusing on building muscle and increasing my metabolism so that I can eventually eat more than 1500 cals and still be in a deficit. I used to practise a lot of yoga and I'm really keen to build my strength back up to where it was pre-surgery. I miss doing handstands!

I appreciate that I need enough energy to be able to work out and build strength, but I'm wondering if this is possible eating at maintenance when I have fat stores to lose, or if I still need to be in a surplus. Any advice
