“When forced, as it seems, by circumstances into utter confusion, get a hold of yourself quickly. Don’t be locked out of the rhythm any longer than necessary. You’ll be able to keep the beat if you are constantly returning to it.” —MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS, 6.11

  • I remember the day, during my weight losing phase, when my spouse made big plates of spaghetti and meat-sauce without measuring anything.
  • I remember the day when I thought I ordered 0-Calorie Diet Pepsi with my carefully-counted Taco Bell order and later discovered it was the regular high-calorie Pepsi.
  • I remember the weekend when my weight-loss support group's conference was served a very not-supporting fried-chicken meal. After the conference, I came home to friends and family wanting a night out on the town of restaurants, movie (popcorn) and bars.

I remember these because my reaction was so adverse. These excursions from my plans, or from the way things ought to have been, seemed huge at the time. Things like this happening made weight-loss seem like it was going to be long-term impossible.

In the past, unexpected things like these happening one too many times would cause me to quit.

Thank goodness for logging. Learning to log through these things, ignoring the totals for that deviant moment, kept me in the effort and I reached goal weight. Looking back, these things didn't matter much at all; any bump on the weigh-in graph disappeared in time.

Life is chaotic. It is more like a wrestling match than a dance. (Also same guy, MEDITATIONS, 7.61) Let's remember that challenges come, but then they also go. We will be alive on the other side of it so get through it as best as you can.
