Weird thing to bring up, but I figured I'd post it here anyway since some people may find it helpful.
If I buy a big tub of ice cream, the same thing happens every time. I start out eating a reasonable amount any time I eat it for desert. Then every so often I get get those "Oh just a little more." moments as I'm scooping ice-cream into the bowel, overestimating how much I will even want.
Lately however, I bought a small tub of expensive ice-cream. I found that if instead of filling a bowel and sitting down, if I just pull the tub out, and eat 1-3 spoonfulls while standing in the kitchen, I end up putting it down, and coming away from it feeling like I ate as much as I wanted to.
I think part of the reason is because when the icecream is less melted, it feels more like you're taking a bite of food. Imagine how small a brownie is, and a chunk of icecream that size feels like more than enough. I think the need to fill something to "actively" eat while watching TV etc is also what makes it easy to over-eat ice cream.
