Mental Health & Long Term Dieting

So, real quick, around 5 years ago I used to be 70 lbs heavier. I've lost the weight and during this time I've had periods of bulking, cutting, and crash dieting thrown in for good measure.

I've got a handle now on my binge eating tendencies, crash dieting, stopped eating and craving junk food, and I've found a diet/lifestyle that I can stick to without too much effort.

But, all this while, I've been counting calories and taking bodybuilding fairly seriously.

Recently, I’ve started to feel like I’m missing out on a lot. I used to be an avid baker and I can’t quite figure out how to incorporate a love of bread making into bodybuilding (partly due to the extra temptation of having fresh warm bread lying around).

Plus, I consider myself to be a foodie, and I feel like there’s an entire world of cuisine that I’m missing out on because the meals aren’t “anabolic” enough. I’m sure I could find a way to throw in such a meal every now and then, but it would take so much planning to figure out how I’d create that caloric buffer in the day and still hit my protein requirements. It’s especially hard when you’re trying to lose weight and are on restricted calories anyways and you have to prioritize protein.

I’ve been doing this for 5 years now - does it ever get to you? Having to research menus in advance before meeting friends, weighing every gram you eat, walking through the grocery store and seeing aisles and aisles of foods and treats that are unavailable to you (not protein-dense / won’t fill you up / might binge on), etc?

If this is just something that I have to come to terms with as part of this lifestyle change and maintaining my weight, that's fine - just tell me straight up. But for those of you that are able to balance bodybuilding, exploring cuisines, and occasionally socializing with friends, how do you do it? I just feel more and more like I’m missing out…
