Growing up, our culture is very much centered around food and manners. If you refuse a drink or food from your host or out socializing, you're being rude. If you didn't empty your plate then you have disrespected the cook/host. If you ordered the wrong thing but didn't eat it (especially when there's a protein in the dish) then you have let the animal died in vain.
Since I migrated and made new friends (mainly school mummy friends). I've observed and learned from them alot. It's slowly changing my mindset to moderate my eating habits and I'm better for it. They are a lovely bunch of ladies with vastly different backgrounds and age group. After lock down we basically all went "oh shit we all certainly have bloated up haven't we?". Without announcing to the whole world they need to diet, they show in their actions and obvious change in their bodies. Also as mum's we all still have to cook and eat with our families and sometimes finish our children's meals (still guilty of it!) So we can relate to one another.
When we go out on a group playdate and everyone brought snacks, them saying "no thank you" also encourage me to do the same. I'd still sneak a slice of fruit from time to time, but learnt to say no to biscuits and crisps.
Be the first person to say no in your group, you might encourage another to start their healthy journey!
