Associating Going Out With Food

I'm just offering this as a thought that I'm working out, I'd be interested in your responses.

[Long story short (and trust me, it's long) at my worst I was 50 pounds heavier than I am now, which is 145. I'm a 5'4.5" woman. For most of my adult life, I've been somewhat chunky but not medically obese. In 2011 I went down to 131 lbs, which on me was quite lean. Since then I gradually gained back 10 pounds, which I hated. Then came Covid. I gained about 5 pounds. Lost it, gained it back, lost it... gained it back. That's not a huge amount, but with the ten pounds I'd gained, I'm 15 pounds over what I want to be.]

The usual pandemic culprits are boredom eating, stress eating, losing track of calories, and so on. All true. But here's another possibility: associating going out with food. Before Covid, I went out of the house - for work, for recreation, or just... because that's what normal people do. I live in an apartment, not a mansion, and I went out every day that the weather wasn't awful.

I live in NYC. During Covid, I began to associate going out with food shopping or drugstore runs and often those drugstore runs turned into necessities plus candy. All my life I'd avoided buying candy bars but over the Covid break I became addicted to pricing cheap candy at Ride Aid. Even when I didn't buy it, I priced it. They sell candy bars for 75 cents on special days.

Now that the city's opened up, it's even worse, because my going out habit has been firmly associated with treats. I don't just go to Sbux and have a coffee. I always have something else.
