I've just scheduled a simultaneous endoscopy and colonoscopy where I'll be put under general anesthesia.
I'm 31, 250 lbs, 5'6" and have never been put under before.
I've been on an on and off lose it journey several times in my life but never do too great overall.
I know these are generally pretty simple procedures, I'm just nervous given my weight.
I straight up asked my gastro "will my being obese pose a risk with anesthesia ?" and she replied "well that's what the anesthesiologist is for, they'll be there ready in case anything happens and I'd prefer to do this in the hospital (vs outpatient) in case we need to intubate"
Not quite the answer I was hoping for, gave me more anxiety really.
Does anyone have experience going under general anesthesia while being obese?
The procedures are to investigate some issues -i have a esophageal hernia, major GERD, a dropped pelvic floor with rectocele, and possibly some polyps etc.
I have a history of bilateral pulmonary embolism 2 years ago, caused by a combo of oral contraception and a blood issue. So that's causing some extra anxiety about bleeding/clotting.
You'd think that would have been my motivator to finally lose it, but then covid happened right after my recovery from that ended and I only got bigger. The worry about anesthesia has jump started me though, I'm hoping to be down at least 20 lbs by the time of the procedures (8 wks from now) but even if i accomplish that, idk how much that'd even help.
Thanks if you can take the time to offer any insight 💓
