I wish I had known this when I was in high school. It’s not normal to have knees that hurt, even if your family ALL has knees that hurt. It’s also not normal to get shin splints every time you even power walk. Gym teachers always thought I was just trying to get out of working.
I have been just dealing with these physical activity issues since I was 10. It’s been a miserable 18 years. I’m 28 and I wish I had known this earlier. My family culture is very “grit your teeth and get over it” and that mentality has destroyed so many knees and backs.
Enter physical therapy. I’ve been going a little over 2 weeks now. Already the pain in my knees is gone. I’ve been able to actually run on a treadmill without my shins plotting murder. I had always assumed that this was caused by my weight, but it turns out that it was a muscle imbalance. My physical therapist has been assigning me homework to strengthen just the muscles that are weak on my specific body. And good lord has it made a difference.
I knew that PT existed, I just thought that it was only for people in much worse shape physically than me. But i just want all the people of lose it who are telling themselves that their excercise issues are ONLY because of their weight to listen up. You are worth it. You deserve to have your body’s eccentricities paid attention to. You deserve to feel better.
Also, I didn’t know this but apparently a lot of health insurance companies fully cover PT. It’s worth looking into.
