Did soda make me gain 40 pounds?

A little backstory, in 2013 I lost about 35 pounds. I went away to school and felt nauseous from anxiety and couldn't eat anything. All I ate was brown rice with broccoli. I started working out regularly. Soon, within a few months, I lost 35 pounds. I was about 160. At this point of my life, I looked my best, and felt my best. I was slim and muscular. I felt great.

I kept the weight off for about 4 years. In 2017, I started to feel nauseous again. Every time I ate, I felt nauseous (acid reflux, anxiety)... A few people told me, that when you feel nauseous, ginger-ale can help you burp and calm your stomach.

3 years go by and, yes, ginger-ale helped me out a bunch. I NEVER was a soda drinker before that. I used to prefer water. As time progressed, I drank a mini ginger-ale ONCE a day. I started to gain weight. Lots of it. I didn't know from where!

I was eating the same things. I wasn't eating junk like (french fries, donuts, hamburgers).... So what was the problem? After gaining about 20 pounds I started to get into a deep depression. I stopped going to the gym regularly. I stopped completely. Did this mean I was sitting around all day eating junk and watching TV? No!

The only thing I could estimate was the soda. I had a mini ginger ale EVERY DAY for two/three years. Now I'm 40 pounds heavier than I used to be and I'm miserable. I feel embarrassed. It's not too noticeable but a few have pointed it out. I'm 5 ' 8 and almost 25. I want to lose it. Do you think soda was what threw me off? Or stopping working out? or Both?
