I’ve been living at home for quarantine. This is the first time I’ve lived at home in 4 years, and since then I’ve learned a lot about nutrition.
Now that I’m home, I’m realizing that it’s no surprise I’ve always struggled with my weight! My mom is a great cook but she dumps olive oil on absolutely everything. Every potentially low-calorie dish gets soaked in oil. She’ll even douse a beautiful bowl of steamed vegetables with oil.
She also thinks whole-wheat pasta is the epitome of health food, and she has a little bit of a vendetta against meat. I’m an avid lifter on low calories so I’m trying to get as much protein for as few calories as possible. Turkey, tuna, and chicken are my best friends. My mom will add chickpeas to her pasta for protein, but I would have to eat a lot of chickpeas (which are pretty calorie-dense) to hit my protein goals. Lastly, she adds cheese to almost everything. I guess cheese can be healthy-ish in small amounts, but we don’t need it at every meal!
She will cook a big bowl of oily pasta with cheese and chickpeas, with a side of bread and oil-soaked broccoli, and get mad at me for respectfully turning it down so I can eat something measured, high-volume, and low-calorie. She knows I’m trying to lose weight but she thinks if I “stop worrying about calories” and just “eat healthy” (her version of healthy) I’ll be golden, which isn’t the case.
I know I sound like a bit of an idiot considering I’m 22 and I’m complaining about my mom preparing meals for me. I’m fully aware. I just needed to vent. Quarantine is getting to me a little
