Just because everyone is doing something .. doesn’t mean it’s normal

I will start this off by saying I hope to god I don’t offend anyone. Y’all are amazing, taking back control over your life and health. I’m just here to offer a perspective. It’s not a new one, so maybe I should say I’m here to validate a perspective.

Just because everyone is doing something .. doesn’t mean it’s normal. Some behaviours are so distorted and damaging, but are being sold to us as normal by the media, and the people around us who got in the habit of doing them.

One of these behaviours is the notion that it’s normal to consume food all day long and for every occasion and every outing. It seems that literally, EVERYTHING, every action, requires food.

  • Going to the cinema ? ohhh bring on the tortilla chips and buttered popcorn and huge colas and munchies.
  • Going for a walk? We must stop for icecream or Nutella crepes or smoothies.
  • Visiting a friend? Coffee and tea aren’t enough, there must be crackers and cake and pies to offer.
  • Kids got back from school? Let’s prepare plates of cookies and milk or a sandwich or crackers and a dip because they must be starving and need an after school snack even though dinner is 2 hours away.
  • Went to the office on a blue Monday and someone brought donuts? you don't want to be rude so you must eat one or two or three (Same goes for a coworker offering you a snack)

I don’t know who exactly came up with these associations, but they just wanted to sell you something, so they told you that what you’re doing isn’t complete without more food. Don’t fall for it and don’t let people shame you for not participating when we never shame them for eating all the day. I don't know why eating is considered superior to not eating. These shamers, they make it sound like it’s self-abuse or something not to put food in your mouth every two hours, like you’re depriving yourself and making your life experiences miserable and hell by not doing what they're doing. It’s just fucking food, relax. It’s not meant to be the highlight of my day, and it's not meant to be the highlight of everything I do .. just a small part of it.

It's okay to go walking and only consume water, and it's okay to go watch a movie and focus on it then go have lunch. It's totally fine for children to come back from school and do their homework and play with their friends then have a good, hearty, dinner. It's okay, it's normal, it's good. Plus, it makes the time you actually enjoy a snack once or twice a week more special.

So if you choose to eat less often, don't be influenced by what everyone is doing. Even if they're thin people who snack all day, it doesn't matter, it's not the point. Eating all day isn't normal or particularly good regardless of how much you weigh, and you're definitely not depriving or starving yourself. Ignore their opinions and comments that no one asked them for and continue doing you. You're okay.
